The New Upper Pier Avenue Residents Survey

Hand Written Survey Comments – Page 2

Hand written comments - Survey # 148

Need to keep HB pedestrian friendly.

Hand written comments - Survey # 153

Please don’t Manhattanize Hermosa Beach.

MB is full of snobs and people feeling entitled to everything “big,” “better” and “best.”

Hand written comments - Survey # 156

Losing the diagonal parking means losing 33% of the parking spaces – bad for business.

No one is clamoring for a median on Pier.

Why would we have a dedicated bike lane on Pier when we do not have one on the Strand? It would be useless.

Hand written comments - Survey # 157

Have more open forums.

Survey too complicated to rank 1-4 or 1-7 on conflicting ideas…

Hand written comments - Survey # 162

Help the schools – we need the best education for our future – so children can carry on.

Hand written comments - Survey # 164

I would appreciate abike lane on Pier Avenue.

A tiered parking structure in front of City Hall would help. Updates in the Easy Reader – a survey, too, they would reach me.

Hand written comments - Survey # 168

Parking is a problem.

Hand written comments - Survey # 175

I knew nothing about these proposed changes until now so I need to be better informed.

One general thing we need are better parking options for guests.

Hand written comments - Survey # 178

Strict or stricter penalties for outsider residents causing problems at bars in Hermosa.

Hand written comments - Survey # 183

I was robbed at gunpoint a few weeks ago.

These types of incidents and crimes must stop.

I cannot believe that these criminals are abusing our city and threatening the residents and they never get away with it.

Police must not just park on Pier Ave. but must patrol the area to keep crime away.

Hand written comments - Survey # 187

If the concern is slowed/stopped traffic along Pier, parallel parking may make that worse…

I love seeing over the buildings & I appreciate that Pier Ave. is a place that still sings “old beach” with its single storied buildings & individual flavor!

Hand written comments - Survey # 190

No parking structure (14th & Man Ave.)

Hand written comments - Survey # 191

Mission statement – stay true to “Beach Community” town – we must downplay/control growth of already existing Bar Life.

A great town getting ruined by outside influx to the Bars.

No more parking west of Monterey.

Hand written comments - Survey # 192

I think, overall, H.B. is well maintained, & any additional improvement is always welcome.

Hand written comments - Survey # 201

Please, please, please consider fire & police departments first when doing any changes.

Hand written comments - Survey # 208A

Upper Pier Avenue cannot truly be addressed in isolation from lower Pier Avenue.

The council must face the problems associated with the proliferation of bars on lower Pier Avenue if we are to improve the Pier Avenue experience for residents and visitors.

One has just to look to our north to find a successful downtown area, which is family friendly, possessing a good mix of shopping and dining, in addition to offering a vibrant nightlife.

What you won’t find is overcrowding, perpetual spring break establishments with drunk revelers spilling out onto the streets.

Adding parking without addressing these issues may provide some increased utilization of the businesses on upper Pier during peak hours.

But it will also increase traffic through Upper Pier targeting Lower Pier bringing larger numbers of drunk and disorderly individuals filtering through our neighborhoods.

Of particular concern to me is the proposal to provide mixed usage for Upper Pier.

The area is busy enough without increasing the density in the area.

Hand written comments - Survey # 210

Why change the charm of our community – it is bad enough that lower Pier has brought in nothing more than noise & nuisance – destruction of people’s property & even that of our local churches – enough is enough.

Personally, the loss of the “constants” – i.e., Bike Shop, Dr. Ed’s, Bow Wow, etc. would be, in my opinion, a real disservice to the residents of HB.

Hand written comments - Survey # 218

The wide sidewalk will not help many businesses along Upper Pier. I don’t want Upper Pier to be like Lower Pier…

Keep this a beach town not Manhattan Beach.

Hand written comments - Survey # 219

When renovating of Pier Ave was first brought about I had visions of the city sprucing up, & spending the 2 million from MTA funds.

Now this money has become seed money for an outrageous project that is going to cost even more millions of dollars. Keep it simple.

Hand written comments - Survey # 220

Walking Pier Ave at least once a week there is always a bik rider on the sidewalk.

If the sidewalk is widened without a bike path, bikes will use the sidewalk.

Hand written comments - Survey # 221

Don’t lose the charm of “Old Hermosa.”

Changes like they have done to Manhattan will destroy this town!

Don’t make any changes.

Hand written comments - Survey # 222

Building over 2 story buildings will darken the area be too daunting; Hermosa is a small city & we should encourage pedestrian & biking habits rather than driving.

We do not need more parking; encourage our families & residents to walk.

The idea of a municipal pool is a big plus & has always been a pet peeve of mine! Growing up in Europe we needed to swim before going in the ocean!

Hand written comments - Survey # 223

I love it the way it is.

Parking is already a deterrent for us business owners.

Please don’t make it impossible for me to do business. Business is good for all concerned!

Hand written comments - Survey # 224

I hope that comments from the public are considered in the decision making process.

I am opposed to any parallel parking because of traffic being backed up & increased risk of accidents.

Hand written comments - Survey # 225

Remember – If you don’t vote in November, you can’t complain in December.

Hand written comments - Survey # 226

The main reason for 14” sidewalks is to facilitate outdoor eating.

Just because you have tables outside doesn’t mean people want to sit along-side a road and eat with the sound of cars and exhaust.

If you have a quality good establishment people will come whether you have outdoor seating or not.

The Pier works because people can watch. People don’t want to car watch.

Hand written comments - Survey # 227

My family lives just off of Upper Pier Ave & we would like to support a family friendly HB.

Hand written comments - Survey # 238

Don’t change Upper Pier. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

Remove parking spaces & reduce traffic flow – you have got to be kidding!!!

Hand written comments - Survey # 240

Reduce the late night hours of business.

Down zone commercial sector.

Hand written comments - Survey # 245

??

Hand written comments - Survey # 256

Tiered parking structure at corner (S.E.) Ardmore and Pier.

Hand written comments - Survey # 259

I would prefer repairing and keeping streets and sidewalks as they are.

I do not approve having any more parking structures.

Hand written comments - Survey # 260

Lived here since 1963.

Love the feel of town as it is.

Please don’t change things too much.

Hand written comments - Survey # 261

No disruption of traffic.

Hand written comments - Survey # 270

Taking care of residents streets would be nice for people of this town.

Like the trash pit of a property on Ninth Street where the PinkBerry is coming in for the last 7 months.

Clean-up our neighborhoods first.

Keep Upper Pier small not over built.

Hand written comments - Survey # 271

Reopen Pier Avenue School. 600 students every day walking down Pier Avenue.

Hand written comments - Survey # 275

42 yr resident of Hermosa and want Hermosa to stay its beautiful self, not look like other cities.

Spend monies for all parts of city & not just Upper Pier Ave.

Hand written comments - Survey # 278

Dog park!

Hand written comments - Survey # 282

Hermosa is more than just 2 streets.

The Council only recognizes Pier Ave & the Strand.

They need to address the need of the citizens and the areas where family’s live instead of funding bars and Prop J.  – that benefit business that focus on serving outsiders & just making a buck off the residents.

More focus needed on quality of life issues by the council.

Hand written comments - Survey # 284

Build a better skate park.

Hand written comments - Survey # 286

This is a nice public service done by private citizens!

Hand written comments - Survey # 287

Continue to enforce rules on adult behavior on Pier Plaza. Keep bars in line!

Hand written comments - Survey # 303

Create a 3rd Street Promenade effect (Santa Monica).

1 story keeps Hermosa small town.

Hand written comments - Survey # 307

I like the idea of more lighting, more landscaping similar to Artesia Blvd.

Also love the “matching funds” concept.

The width of sidewalks is fine as is but could use some upgrading. Also Oak Alley could use a new wall along the border w. Trailer Park.

This will make it easier to keep cleaner.

Thanks a lot.

Hand written comments - Survey # 402

We need more parking and an “expert” skate park.

Hand written comments - Survey # 415

16th 7 PCH – new light is unsafe!

Any chance it will return to a regular cross section light?

Hand written comments - Survey # 426

Less bars

More culture

More like Abbot Kinney, Santa Monica Promenade (bust less commercial)

Hand written comments - Survey # 429

Nice job.

Good to see people involved in H.B. to keep it the town I moved into to live for the rest of my life and raise my kids.

Hand written comments - Survey # 432

I think we should revisit the 2 lanes.

The vocal minority (8th Street residents) seem to be the only ones that didn’t like it.

All the surveys disputed their complaints.

Diagonal parking is much better than parallel parking.

Hand written comments - Survey # 434

My husband & I feel there are a lot more punks/hoodlums in Hermosa Beach over the past year or two.

I don’t feel as safe around the Strand & Pier Ave as I used to. What can be done about this?

Hand written comments - Survey # 443

Put something at the end of Pier – light sculpture.

Hand written comments - Survey # 444

Obviously the city needs to make money, but the city should not sell its soul to do so.

I think what’s very important is that Hermosa doesn’t start to look like every single other beach town with identical stores and vibe.

Hermosa has history and character, a Venice of the South Bay. We should look at what Venice has done and emulate them.

Go look at Abbott Kinney and Pacific Ave.

They are growing and catching a lot of local & tourist money without selling out.

We should get rid of national “chains” and embrace local business owners and independent places.

We can have art & commerce without selling Hermosa’s soul.

Also, we should not add more bars. We have plenty.

More good unique restaurants and businesses are where we should be going. Thanks for your time!

Also, please don’t keep metering everything & raising the prices. It’s bad for everyone visiting.

Hand written comments - Survey # 445

Fire Steve Burrell and get some sane management in this city.

Hand written comments - Survey # 449

Don’t know if [it] makes sense but if the parking was staggered on both north & south sides meaning wider sidewalks & parallel parking in front of rest. & diagonal in front business.

Don’t know if it will look right but a different approach since rest. On both sides & may not want to lose as much parking.

Hand written comments - Survey # 456

A city with as little parking as we have should not be reducing parking spots by introducing parallel slots.

Hand written comments - Survey # 459

Huge condo/office projects seem to be moving Hermosa into a concrete city like Marina del Rey.

Hand written comments - Survey # 472

I do not feel city money should be used to improve private business.

Property owners need to improve their buildings…

Hand written comments - Survey # 473

No tattoo parlors

No exotic dance parlors

No porno/adult bookstores

Hand written comments - Survey # 478

Gateway to Hermosa in the CENTER of town – No!

Put gateway at least at Pier and PCH.

Yikes! No bikes? How a plan that does NOT include a bike path even [is] considered.

Pier Ave is the place for a bike path.

Hand written comments - Survey # 479

I have been wanting a pool for years.

I have kids & I have to go to other cities for swim lessons where we get second choice & pay more & have to drive to get to.

Please keep the four lanes plus lots of parking in front of shops.

Thanks for asking.
