Hand written comments - Survey # 6

Hermosa is slowly losing its character & quaintness.

I would like to see some $s spent on repaving residential streets.

Our block is a disgrace.

Hand written comments - Survey # 10

It looks to me like we are going to have a UPA line with commercial condos.

200 Pier, mortuary lots, Alta Dena.

Plus one on Hermosa Ave., two (at least) on PCH – what a shame that developers rule.

Can’t the UPAC do something about it?

Hand written comments - Survey # 12

I feel quite helpless about the deterioration of Hermosa.

What happened to LOW DENSITY?   For every home demolished, 3 go up!

Why are we the only city from Torrance to Sunset with no bike path?

Hand written comments - Survey # 13

Ban plastic bags from retail stores.

Create a drop off bin for non recyclable batteries.

Shuttle bus for the city.

Senior housing where Hope Chapel is currently & departing.

Require restaurants to use biodegradable/recyclable to go containers.

Hand written comments - Survey # 15

Would it be possible to make the parking structure underground?

Parking is ourt # 1 problem, however, large parking garages are obviously unattractive.

Hand written comments - Survey # 18

People density in Commercial areas is a positive thing.

It is this attraction in the core central business district of all great cities both large and small that makes them great and promotes economic well-being.

Business needs people and without people Business will wither and die.

I am not suggesting that Upper Pier Avenue should become what lower Pier Avenue is e.g. (bars, and more bars)

Rather, the City can adopt specific general plan amendments and use zoning as a tool controlling the specific types of retail and commercial uses permitted on Upper Pier.

Hand written comments - Survey # 22

Any extra general money ought to be used to repair some of the badly cracked & pot holed streets in town.

We are beatified enough!

Hand written comments - Survey # 25.A

I feel in today’s stresses on the environment that this city is not addressing alternate transportation.

We need less cars – more mini buses and bicycles.

We live in a beach community – the city of Boise with a 4 Seasons climate has bicycle lanes throughout the city – why can’t we focus on that?

Hand written comments - Survey # 26

There seems to be a rush to get this project through. I think we need to slow down.

Hand written comments - Survey # 33

How can the city consider increasing the number of visitors without first increasing the number of parking spaces?

How many businesses will benefit?  Only bars and restaurants.

How many of the owners are residents?

We sacrifice residents welfare to restaurant owners.

Hand written comments - Survey # 34

All the discussions about further development in HB does not include the need for considerably more parking.

The residents living west of PCH do not want less than 4 lanes of traffic on Pier.

Parallel parking on one or both sides will delay traffic further as people try to park.

Allowing 2-3 story buildings is a nice idea, but where will the parking be?

Hand written comments - Survey # 35

I am concerned about the impending impact of increased day-time and weekend traffic on or around Pier.

I believe City Planners may be underestimating the volume of traffic to be added from all the new office condo projects around town and the high number of special events.

There is absolutely no way Pier Avenue can function without use of all four lanes operating.

The parallel parking idea is a recipe for disaster!...

Why does Hermosa Council feel like we need to attract even more visitors and out-of-towners down to our city?

Residents like Hermosa because it is a little forgotten Shangri-La, peaceful, quiet, and a slice of nature.

We don’t really need more traffic and more visitor issues…

Hand written comments - Survey # 36

We do not need wider sidewalks.

I have pushed strollers, jogged, ridden my bike, etc. countless times and never found sidewalks to be too narrow.

Wider sidewalks would only benefit the already over-abundant restaurants. A bike lane would be great.

Stop the bar madness…

Hand written comments - Survey # 37

Appreciate your efforts to get more people in the community involved.

Hand written comments - Survey # 38

Pier Avenue in Hermosa needs “small town charm.”

We are a small town! We need a fresh coat of beautiful paint.

People need to feel like they are walking in a a beach cottage/dining area with lots of “cottage” charm.

That means picket fences, roses, bright colors, rocking chairs & an overall “old” feel. Man. Beach is “modern” feeling.

We in Hermosa Beach need to step up & set ourselves apart from the rest…

Hand written comments - Survey # 39

Build pedestrian bridge across PCH at Pier on south side.

Build pedestrian bridge across greenbelt at Pier and Valley/Ardmore eliminating surface crosswalks.

This should architectural (arched) and a gateway structure that signage forever could be hung from.

Put traffic lights, like MB, at Valley/Ardmore and Pier on greenbelt.

Consider diversifying traffic flow from Pier Ave. at fire station West to decreese traffic flow on Upper Pier Avenue.

Keep current traffic configuration on Upper Pier Avenue except eliminate median.

Hand written comments - Survey # 40

We on 16th Street are already overwhelmed by the “improvements” Hermosa made by putting a traffic signal at the bottom of our hill.

Residents of this area have been attending HB cit mtgs.

For 2 yrs and Hermosa government still does whatever is best for business owners!

Stop trying to turn Hermosa into a Santa Monica!

We want to have the “small town” atmosphere back!

Stop trying to upgrade, electronify everything, and push more business, population & noise on us!

We attend mtgs, elect officials, vote & nothing ever changes.

HB city government still ignores the rights of residents & finds “loop holes” to push thru projects they want.

Or, enough notification isn’t given to residents to attend mtgs.

Not everyone is, or wants to be, “on-line” for everything!

Hand written comments - Survey # 41

I am in favor of ending our city’s status as a “party/drinking destination.”

We need to return the emphasis to that of a family oriented city.

A broader band of businesses like we once had downtown, i.e. theater, hardware store, pharmacy.

The new construction on PCH over the past 15 years is not tasteful.

Take a look at the city of Glendale CA to see where we are heading.

We are just a few years behind them in the steady decline of quality.

Hand written comments - Survey # 42

I think the UPAC should be replaced with a Hermosa Beach Preservation Committee!

What the past Council and (current) have done to our city is sad.

(As well as the Planning Commission).

Our city has been transformed from a sleepy little beach community with cute beach bungalows and funky shops and eateries into a town only visited by weekend drunks and now gang members.

It needs to stop!

People should visit our town for the beach, and the businesses should be geared for community and not the out of towners who only trash our city.

Hand written comments - Survey # 44

Despite being an avid bicycler, I don’t believe Pier Avenue is a good place for a bike path.

Hand written comments - Survey # 46

Satisfied with Pier Avenue as is.

Hand written comments - Survey # 47

Area needs more trees both sides of street to create a beautiful entry to the city.  Leave sidewalks as they are.

Hand written comments - Survey # 48

This project was the brainchild of the downtown Bar & Resturant Association, the businesses on Upper Pier Avenue have been telling the city to “leave us alone” for more than 7 years.

You do not need to do anything except keep existing streets in good repair.

This is a beach – not a target for big development. Stop this nonsense.

Good government is govt. that leaves us alone.

Enforce existing health & safety rules & quit trying to “find” new projects.

Hand written comments - Survey # 49

I do not favor changing the parking.

I do not want sidewalks widened – they are already too wide.

Skateboarders now use it as a speedway.

How much sidewalk do you need to walk on…

Just clean up the existing business fronts.

Widening sidewalks, changing parking, will do nothing to enhance Upper Pier Ave. – LEAVE IT ALONE.

Hand written comments - Survey # 53

Survey does not give any consideration to residents with limited mobility who must use a car to patronize local businesses.

Postpone using funds for landscaping and street lighting improvements until residential streets are improved, repaired and repaved.

Hand written comments - Survey # 54

I am not in favor of any additional parking structures.

It’s crowded enough as it is!

People seems to find places to park even during the fairs.

PS One fair per year is enough.

Place a “tax” or increase fees… on Pier Ave bars to support schools.

Hand written comments - Survey # 56

This whole act is more bars.

Councils before have done it and so of course not only have they lied and so does this council

It is going to be bars and more cages for the people on the wide new sidewalks.

The regular business stores will be gone and the new will be Bars Bars and more Bars.

Hand written comments - Survey # 57

Why do we need so many business condos?

To many overly big buildings will ruin the small town effect.

How about more parking?

We have lost a lot of small businesses which are being replaced by upscale boutiques and restaurants.

More will be lost with the beach front sale of Mermaids etc.  More 3 story buildings!

Hand written comments - Survey # 59

I think a bridge over PCH would be a lot more beneficial than a bridge over the greenbelt.

A bridge over the greenbelt only increases speed on Pier Ave if stop signs are removed.

I don’t see any benefit to pedestrians since there are 4 stop signs in the area.  However crossing PCH is a lot more dangerous.

Hand written comments - Survey # 60

We like your [survey] approach.

Hand written comments - Survey # 65

Less commercialized downtown.

DO NOT increase retail & bar square footage in order to increase the city’s tax base…

DO NOT want Hermosa becoming like Venice Beach. DO NOT over commercialize.

This city is for Residents first – commercial 2nd.

Our property taxes should fund another Lunar Landing program by NASA if fiscal responsibility is exercised.

More is NOT better always.

Hand written comments - Survey # 66

I am very concerned with the direction the city is going to take with all the properties at play on the ocean front near the pier.

Huntington Beach is a case in point, in my mind, of what large development creates in a small town, and at least Huntington has a much larger residential area to balance somewhat the downtown development.

Here, it is all right in our faces and the impact will change this community forever.

Does it make sense to allow development requiring more & more city services (i.e. – the six additional officers now required downtown) to overwhelm the character of the city & bring in artificially contrived hordes whose primary interest is not in the beach for its natural attractions.

Hand written comments - Survey # 67

I’m not clear on the kind of “improvements” suggested for PCH.

I usually drive mainly to the Vons shopping area 1-2X/wk.

With mixed use suggestions –

1.  Depends on the architecture

2.  Like to wait & see how the new projects (on Pier/Manhattan Ave) look & works out (mainly re: traffic, parking, etc.)

“Gateways” are really an really an awful idea – a nicely designed sign would be better.

My suggestion: Use $$ to repair all current ugly brown & yellow street signs.

This change would in itself make the whole city look better.

Hand written comments - Survey # 72

Yes!!! I have concerns about the UPAC project. First, let’s talk financing.

How much Hermosa money will go into the project.

Shouldn’t the McPherson oli controversy be settled before Hermosa embarks on such a complex-expensive undertaking?

Now that Assemblyman Lieu has pulled his proposal aren’t chances of a settlement diminished?

I don’t see how Hermosa can win in the McPherson case.

Now let’s talk about Pier Ave. My wife & I walk down Pier Ave. every day to the Strand for our daily exercise.

Every time I walk by the “200” project I think “When will this be completed?” Across the street, the dairy is up for development with office condos & snack shop.

How about “Pink??” It’s been empty for several weeks. It’s up for grabs as well.

Now let’s talk about the mortuary. White & Day moved out & the building stood empty for quite a while.

The buildings were finally demolished & the lost stood vacant; now something is finally happening.

What will it be like with sidewalks being torn out with these other developments taking place?

Hand written comments - Survey # 101

1.  2. lanes

2.  New landscaping

3.  Plant new big shade trees (not palms!).  Let's be a real "cool city."

Hand written comments - Survey # 103

I like Hermosa just the way it is!

Hand written comments - Survey # 104

Like City Council meetings, the city has been great while 338 Pier is being constructed and destroying my house.

Very supportive & helpful!

Hand written comments - Survey # 105

Don’t waste our money. Don’t build a new fire station. Spend wisely!

Hand written comments - Survey # 106

Too many bars in Hermosa.

Too much is done to support a handful of bar owners.

Hand written comments - Survey # 107

No new development between Cypress and Hermosa Ave.

Stop all 2 story or more floors on Pier Ave.

Keep our lives safe for walking!

No kids need to confront angry motorists driving through Hermosa!

Hand written comments - Survey # 108

Keep Hermosa a quaint beach city.

Not like Manhattan…All new housing needs green space in front to keep beach feel.

Hand written comments - Survey # 109

I think surveys are great especially on important matters like this. There should be more of these in the future.

I cannot hear Council meetings because I have Direct TV and I am not going to meetings that last too many hours.

The community needs to be more informed then they can have some input.

I am not in favor of government spending based on 5 people.

Better communication is the way to go.

Hand written comments - Survey # 110

Thank you for doing this!

Hand written comments - Survey # 117

Bike lanes!

Hand written comments - Survey # 124

The intersections of Pier & Valley/Ardmore are chaotic at best & when the kids get out of school they are dangerous and basically out-of-control.

Anything which can be done to ease the confusion I would support, e.g.: crossover ped walkway on greenbelt for children, joggers, etc;

move the bus stop out of the equation; be sure to keep 4 lanes.

Hand written comments - Survey # 135

You need to build a walking bridge “over” PCH @ Pier before people are killed.
